Helping you find happiness and purpose beyond loss.
It took me over 20 years to tell my story. I began writing in 1997, just two years after losing my first husband. I was only 30, hoping that sharing my experience would bring some peace. But as much as I wanted to tell it then, I needed another 20 years—and the painful loss of my second husband—to gain the perspective to share it truthfully.
Life After Losses began as a way to help others heal and rediscover happiness. I released my memoir on the 7th anniversary of my second husband’s passing, sharing my journey through unimaginable grief and the resilience I found along the way. From there, I developed Moving Past Grief, a collection of practical strategies to cope with loss. But with Grief Recovery for Adults, I’ve shifted the focus to you. Using the PURPOSE framework, this book is a guide to finding your path, reclaiming happiness, and discovering new purpose after loss.
My name is James LaVeck. I’ve learned that happiness is possible, and I’m here to help you find it.

Some of these collaborations have led me to co-produce three films to date (A Very Sordid Wedding – 2017, the multiple-award-winning Cognitive – 2019, and Shafted – 2023) because I believe in their messages of love and inclusion and the empowerment of LGBTQ+ artists.
I am one of the Executive Producers for the indie horror/sci-fi film Beach Chain, coming in late 2023. I joined this team because I loved the story and the diversity of the cast, crew, and production team.
I’ve also Executive Produced a Classical Crossover album by three-time Billboard Charting artist Jason Antone titled “Inside My Heart.” Jason sings beautifully in 5 languages with a full orchestra.
As an actor, my resume keeps growing.
I’m a single father living in New England with my two kids and a dog, and they all listen just about the same. That is to say, not at all. But they’re my life.
My immediate family lives in California, and my in-laws live in Indiana. I have been fortunate to be able to work from home to be there for my kids as they’ve been growing up, and I thank my lucky stars every day.
We love to go on adventures and explore the planet, and I’ve got some adventures planned!
